Looks like a nice fishing window right now in those smaller tribs that normally might be frozen up this time of the season. In shore warm water but it didnt stop hard strikes at dawn not much left in the fight afterwards. Changes will take effect once you reload the page. The fish are placed in downstream pens at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina and will be fed and cared for before release in about 3 4 weeks. So for now the drifting and swinging conditions look pretty good. Temps for the weekend are forecast to rebound back into the 40s F. Water flows are def enough to encourage some fresh fish migrations at any time and the water color now is in a sweet spot for good presentations. Dam action has been spotty, but there are people hooking up. Downstream frog water areas are all open with no icing conditions yet. Its ok and encouraged for out of the area anglers to verify their economic impact for the upstate NY tourism economies! The state is funding the effort as part of the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. Forecast ahead thru the end of the weekend and into begin part of next week is a little warmer but still dropping back down below freezing at night. Im not hearing a lot from the other area smaller waterways but you can bet patient anglers could find some drop back action or a few fresh browns or steelhead in the lower reaches. Id look for it going high and stained about thru this weekend. Bass fishing in Sodus has been excellent. Fast water spots on the Oak remain open with just some bank ice. Lakeshore conditions should likewise be wide open if any hardware chuckers were so inclined to make some casts. A couple days of warm temps and some rain yesterday has the trib flows up and rolling again! That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. To the west, theres not a lot of recent reports but flows should be more like moderate to medium and going toward clear. And thats after a brush with some area wide snow tonight and tomorrow that might only be a dusting this far north on the WNY Niagara Frontier. Everyone enjoyed the great hospitality and convenience of the Archers Club and experienced some good fishing. Thats on the ground now and will make for the next spate of water when that melts. Flows in the Oak are staying high with some stubborn overflow water that should be receding by about today leaving just the full cranking turbine flows. Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Flows for now are slightly high or maybe one click less consisting of all turbine water at 2+ feet of visibility. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Theres no new real cold temps in the near forecast and if even this rain doesnt open the smaller area tribs right away by this weekend or next week they likely will be thanks to a continued warm-ish weather forecast. Then theres the building King numbers at the dam, fish numbers probably outpacing the creeling pressure to this point. Pier head foot soldiers may want to at least occasionally do an about face from lakeside casting at times to check the scene in the channel. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. And maybe into the early spring! Warmer temps near 70F are in the forecast for the weekend. Not a lot of fish reported holding, still on that early run kamikazee mission to the dam. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. Long range forecast looks more or less winter-like thru next week and so this may be the settling in of winter conditions that could last for more than a couple days. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. All non club members are reminded to act as courteous and responsible guests so that we may all enjoy the fishing access there now and in the future. There are now very small spurts of kings coming through. Slightly high and stained flows make for good drifting chances after all the high and dirty. Could be guys were finding easier fishing flows on the smaller waterways. Theres no part of the driftable or castable or swingable waterway that is frozen over. And along with the browns theres the chance for Atlantics, cohos or steelhead rounding out nice mixed bag chances. Licorice Man. Some Lake Effect Snow showers has amounted to a few more inches of fluffy accumulation on top of the 1-2 ft previous snow. The longer those fish stay in the overflow pool, they harder they become to get out. All the trib flows are on the retreat from the last rain. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. The parking donation will be $10 per car. Given somewhat of the late start to the salmon action, Id have to say that we might only be amidships in the run.Look for Kings arriving into start of November. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Any snow will be likely south of the area. Meaning flows are back on a slow retreat now but water color prob wont be the dirtiest itll be until today or tomorrow. We hooked a lot of fish both days. Water temps have flirted with 40 F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. Look for some late fish to come thru but likely not in any great concentrations. Salmon will likely be found from the estuary up through town. Since 1/4 inch of rain did not do much it looks like 1/2 inch or more of rain in a storm or otherwise would be needed to effect any positive change in flows. One positive for the continued cold weather is trib water temps have not spiked high yet. Releases may change due to weather, engineering controls and other conditions. The next significant rise in flows may bring on some fresh steelhead action thru March. A dropping and clearing water scenario is a contrast for what youd rather see as rising or high flows for best chances at fresh fish migrations. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. The NYS Canal Corporation releases water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario Tributaries in Western New York on an extended and pulsed schedule each fall to enhance trout and salmon fishing opportunities. Tuesdays fishing was EPIC despite it being a bit breezy. That amount of rain would definitely be a good thing. Look for flows to stay up with the stained water color. Fishing has been a challenge. Chance of fresh steelhead on the backside of the last higher flows or at least the past falls browns and steelhead should be redistributed. Cool if not coldish temps forecast thru this week with rain showers. The week ahead looks mostly clear with seasonal temps and then colder again toward the end of the week. Flows in the Oak are responding nicely to a few days of previous cold with dropping and clearing. Sunday morning started out like gang busters. Good chance of rain on Thursday carrying over with gloom on Friday and possibility of 0.5 1 inch of precipitation. The other area smaller tribs should be going from mod/med flows to slightly stained med/slightly high flows. Next chance at precipitation or showers is this weekend. Brown trout like this rutted out nice fish are eager strikers and you might encounter steelhead, salmon, lakers or bass. Captain Mikes recommendation is using mainly a flasher fly bite yellow flashers, blue green flies. Any big steelhead this time of the year in relatively warm water are going to be a challenge to land! Crabs are working off 3-way rigs, as are Ned rigs and swim baits. All the best web info, bulletin boards, angler skill and top notch equipment cannot replace getting out there and actually fishing! Now for the mid week, its warmed up again! Dont be afraid to start targeting the warmer water many kings will hold and 60 to 67 water this time of year. A little stain, something like 2 ft of visibility. For now on the Oak anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. Try to keep at least six (6) feet of distance between you and others. Cool nights and cooperative winds should make for better battles with more staging Kings and trout chances as well. Just a handful of cars seen at each access spot. Boy did they hit it just right! Other area smaller tribs are at moderate to medium and slightly stained flows. Bankside movement may be hard in spots if no trail is broken already. You can catch steelhead and some browns. Flows in the Oak are already on the rise today thanks to increasing overflow water. A few civilian small boat trollers noted in the near shore/good looking/semi stained waters off Point Breeze. Coldish days in the low 30s F and 20s at night look to be dropping trib flows to the east at Sandy quicker then flows to the west at Johnson.
